Changing lives one stitch at a time!

MISSION

Founded in October 2021, Knit for Good aims to help people feel better through the practice of knitting.

The mission of Knit for Good is to teach kids and adults within the walls of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital how to knit, and provide them with the necessary materials to continue once the lesson is complete.

The tight-knit group of volunteers – of all ages and skill levels – makes and donates hats to the staff, patients and their families, as well.

WHY KNITTING

Mental health is a growing issue in America and data proves that the practice of knitting can positively impact mental wellness.

Research shows that knitting can reduce depression and anxiety, slow the onset of dementia and distract us from chronic pain. The rhythm of knitting helps with serotonin release and can help to lower heart rate and blood pressure. It alters our brain chemistry, lowering stress hormones and boosting the production of serotonin and dopamine.

Knitting is social, relaxing and good for mental well-being. Not only is it a beautiful way to create and give, but knitting brings us peace and joy – and who couldn’t use a little more of that?

ABOUT US

Knit for Good was founded in October 2021 by friends Debbie, Kirsten and Karen.

When Debbie and her Great Dane Archie were visiting patients at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, one of the patients’ mothers taught her to knit and suggested that Debbie continue making hats for babies in the NICU.

Debbie, Kirsten and Karen have grown the group to more than 50 knitters who meet weekly to create with the intent of giving. Knit for Good knitters donated more than 1200 handmade hats in the first year and the rest is history!
